Becoming Our Best

CULTIVATING THE GOOD VS. ERADICATING THE BAD

Many years ago, a wise man told me, "You'd do much better in life if you would put as much energy into doing the right thing as you expend in trying to avoid doing the wrong thing". I didn't fully understand it at that moment, but time and experience have proved he was right. But why was it right?

Part of it is where I focus my energy. If I were trying to climb a mountain and concentrating only on avoiding falling, my progress would be slow or perhaps none at all. It seems we need to be looking at a positive goal and trying to find the best way to get there.

And yet, in our culture, we are mostly rewarded for not making mistakes. We do this through avoiding doing the wrong thing. So maybe the safest course of action is just to stay at home in bed under the covers?

I think not. Life is full of positive and constructive possibilities, but each requires some risk-taking on our part. Not the risks that happen in the darkest part of the night, but those that occur and must be chosen in broad daylight. Things like:

• Being kind to all those people we meet along the way

• Being thankful for life, health and relationships

• Speaking out constructively for what we believe

• Helping those who have less than we do

• Forgiving the "jerks" in our life

The list could go on, but I think you know what I'm talking about. Looking for places where each of us can make a difference and then doing something graceful about it. Dropping our negative attitudes and being ready for situations where perhaps only we can help people and situations be better.

Remember that the tiny pebble dropped in a pool produces ripples that may go on and make a difference long beyond the first splash. In a similar manner, we need to just reach out, do the right thing and let go of the outcome.

The world has much to gain from your good actions; and you will be on the road to being the better person you want to be.
